COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The purpose of this course is to help you develop the ability to analyze, evaluate, and even understand literature.

Further, you will learn to express this understanding in clear, coherent, and logical prose.

TEXTS: TBA

SUPPLIES NEEDED:
one journal pocket folder

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Thorough (!) reading of the texts is the first requirement for this course. To ensure your cooperation in this matter, I have devised Five methods to evaluate the intensity ofyour interaction with the texts.

A. A literature-response journal--Each class meeting, I will assign a short writing assignment that mustbe completed before the next class period. Your response should be limited to one page, hand written, single spaced. I advise you to make good use of this opportunity to evaluate your own feelings about a text before taking on someone else's. Your opinions and individual input will be crucial to the success or failure of this class. When I evaluate the journal entries, I will NOT grade your grammar (though you should try to make goodgrammar a natural part of your writing); instead I will focus on the quality of thought expressed (that is your reasoning, logic, use of evidence fromthe story). This portion of the course work will comprise 15% of your grade. If you are not able to attend on any given day, you must turn in the assignmentbefore the class. Late assignments will receive a ZERO (0).

B. Out of Class Papers--Numbering2, they will be around 5 typed pages in length. The purpose of this paper is to argue for a thesis about a focused thesis about literature (eg, an image or recurrent theme in a poem or series of poems).

C. In class Exams--Numbering2, they will be in variable formats and designed to test your growing knowledgeof Truth in the Universe.

D. Cyber Roundtable participation: Since this class meets once a week, your input and interaction with others on line will take on added significance.

E. Final Exam: TBA

Attendance:Attendance is NOT an option. Much of the work we will do in class will NOT be in your textbook. For the class to be successful,we all must participate; therefore, attendance will be defined as follows:

1)Completed assignment (reading and written)
2)Prepared to discuss the topic of the day
3)Ready to offer informed questions or statements
4)Respect for other students questions and opinions

Absence:If you know that you are going to be absent or ifyou are having trouble with completing your essay or any project, SEEME BEFORE THE PROBLEM HAPPENS.

Assignments:An assignment is complete when all the required elementsof the assignment have been satisfied. Though you may not receive a lettergrade on each element of the assignment (e.g. prewriting, outlines, etc),each element must be completed for credit of the entire assignment. Please take note that all readings assigned fall under this umbrella statement.

Late Assignments:Assignments are due in the first ten minutes of the class period on the day announced; any assignment submitted more than ten minutes into the period will be  considered late. If you know that you will be unable to attend class, put your assignment in my hand  before the class period begins. A latepaper will be scored one letter grade lower for every day that it is late. All projects must be submitted to receive credit. Any essay over two weekslate will receive a "0" instead of an "F", but must still be written. Absolutelyno late essays,  corrections, or other assignments (except the final)will be accepted after the last regular class period of the semester.

GRADING: To pass the course, students must complete every assignment and exam.  The assignmentsfor which you will be responsible above and beyond daily assignments duringthe semester will include the following:
Journal..........................15%
2 out of class Papers............15%each
2 in class exams.................15%each
Forum Participation.................15%
Final Exam..............10%

CALCULATINGYOUR FINAL GRADE:
To calculate your final grade, use the following information:
1) A=4pts.; B=3pts.; C=2pts.; D=1pts.; F=0pts
2) Take the number point value and multiply it by the percentage. (e.g. 4x.05=.2ptsfor 1st assignment)
3) Add the results together and the final grade will be based on the following scale:
 3.75-4.0=A
 3.0-3.74=B
 2.0-3.0=C
 < 2.0=F
Dsdo not constitute a final passing grade.

FORMATGUIDELINES:
1. Outof class papers should be TYPED unless this will cause undue hardship forthe student. Students are encouraged to learn a computerized word processingprogram.
2. 8 1/2x 11" white paper is the only paper I will accept.
3. Allwriting assignments (in class or out of class) must be DOUBLE SPACED.
4. If typed, margins must be one inch on each side of the paper.

WARNING:Any papers which do not fulfill all of these requirements will NOT be accepted and will be counted as late.
